Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has initiated large-scale shipments of its next-generation 587-Ah high-capacity battery cells for energy storage systems. Since the product’s launch in June, the company has delivered a cumulative 2 GWh of these cells, with total shipments projected to reach 3 GWh by the end of the year.

Manufactured at CATL’s facility in Jining, Shandong, the 587-Ah cells are produced at a rate exceeding 220,000 units per day. On average, each cell is completed in under two seconds, contributing to a 42% reduction in production costs and achieving a safety failure rate measured at parts-per-billion levels.

The latest cells offer an energy density of 434 Wh/L, representing a roughly 10% improvement over the previous generation. They follow earlier 280-Ah and 314-Ah designs and reflect three years of research and development. To date, CATL’s globally deployed energy storage systems—spanning these and other cell formats—total more than 256 GWh across over 1,000 projects, all operating without recorded safety incidents.

Energy storage is a key component of CATL’s business portfolio. In 2024, the company reported total revenue of RMB 362 billion, with its energy storage battery systems contributing RMB 57.29 billion, or about 15.8% of the total. Power battery systems accounted for RMB 253.04 billion, or nearly 70% of revenue.

In addition to the 587-Ah cells, CATL has begun mass production of its fifth-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which deliver enhanced energy density and extended cycle life. According to CATL’s chairman, these LFP batteries mark another milestone in the company’s effort to advance high-performance, cost-effective solutions for electric vehicles and stationary storage applications.
