China’s new energy industry has been growing rapidly, yet challenges remain in standardizing carbon reduction methodologies, securing financing for supply chain participants, and achieving alignment with international carbon footprint standards. To address these gaps, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) recently signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the China Beijing Green Exchange (CBGX), Ningde Communications Investment Group, and Ningbo Yiheng Carbon Technology. The partnership will concentrate on three core areas: methodology development, green finance innovation, and global standards alignment.
Under this agreement, CATL and CBGX will develop a unified carbon reduction methodology tailored to the battery industry. As battery applications expand from new energy vehicles and energy storage systems to marine and industrial uses, consistent scientific quantification standards are needed. Once officially recognized, companies’ verified emission reductions will qualify as “green assets,” facilitating participation in carbon trading markets.
The partners also plan to collaborate with financial institutions to create a green evaluation framework for the extensive battery supply chain. This framework will assess metrics including carbon footprint, energy intensity, and the proportion of renewable energy used. Suppliers that demonstrate strong sustainability performance can unlock more efficient access to green financing and preferential lending rates.
Finally, the agreement seeks to bridge domestic and international regulatory regimes. Although China hosts the world’s largest new energy value chain, differences in carbon certification standards can limit global recognition of domestic emission reductions. The cooperation aims to harmonize China’s practical experience with international carbon market rules and green certification systems, enhancing the global credibility of Chinese new energy enterprises.
