CATL introduced its TENER Stack energy storage system during its first appearance at Smarter E South America 2025 in São Paulo. The TENER Stack is billed as the world’s first stackable, containerized energy storage solution with a scalable 9 MWh capacity. Compatible with various CATL cell technologies, it offers up to five years of zero degradation or high-temperature resistance, making it suitable for South America’s diverse climates.
Brazil’s renewable-heavy grid is driving demand for flexible storage solutions. According to BloombergNEF, storage capacity in Brazil is poised for rapid growth as the country aims to invest over $6 trillion by 2050 to achieve net-zero emissions. Addressing these needs, the TENER Stack occupies 45% less land area and delivers 50% higher energy density than traditional 20-foot systems. A single 9 MWh stack can fully charge 45 electric buses (each with 200 kWh packs) or supply an average household for six years. For large-scale deployments, it reduces the number of containers required for an 800 MWh station by 45% compared to 5 MWh units.
Weighing under 36 tonnes, the design complies with transport regulations in 99% of global markets. Standard shipping compatibility can lower transport costs by up to 35%, while a low center of gravity enhances stability on routes with bridges, tunnels, or rural infrastructure limits.
Safety features include lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry for thermal stability, upgraded gas sensors that are 40% more sensitive, and fire suppression systems that activate 35% faster. Triple-layer insulation provides up to two hours of fire resistance, and the system meets IEEE693 seismic standards and withstands Category 5 hurricanes. An overhead thermal management system limits operating noise to 65 dB(A), enabling urban installation.
The TENER Stack’s gas sensors require no maintenance for 10 years, reducing downtime in remote sites. A redesigned container UPS extends backup power for the battery management system and explosion-proof fans from 20 minutes to two hours during outages. Alongside other offerings such as EnerOne+ and the broader TENER series, CATL provides solutions for off-grid, commercial, and utility-scale projects, engineered to handle temperatures from –35 °C to 55 °C and high humidity.
Having powered Brazil’s first utility-scale storage project in 2022, CATL continues to expand its presence across South America, establishing local teams in Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. A new office in Chile is set to open this September, further supporting regional customers.
