Sungrow and ERS Energy have reached a combined 1 GWh of energy storage projects across Malaysia and the Philippines, marking a new milestone in their partnership. The announcement was highlighted by a signing ceremony and reflects the companies’ focus on supporting the region’s changing grid requirements and renewable energy growth.
In Malaysia, the companies are working on the 441 MWh, four-hour MyBeST project in Bahau, with ERS Energy serving as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor. The project is part of Malaysia’s national large-scale battery energy storage initiative led by the Energy Commission of Malaysia, Suruhanjaya Tenaga. As the country expands renewable generation, the battery energy storage system is expected to improve grid stability, help manage the balance between supply and demand, and support greater solar integration. By storing electricity when renewable output is high and delivering it when needed, the system can also reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking generation.
In the Philippines, Sungrow and ERS Energy are collaborating on a 556 MWh, four-hour battery energy storage project for ACEN, with ERS Energy again serving as the EPC contractor. A key feature of the project is its grid-forming capability, which is designed to provide active support for grid voltage and frequency. The project will also participate in the country’s Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, allowing electricity to be stored and dispatched based on market conditions. According to the companies, this operating model is intended to improve the use of stored electricity while supporting a more reliable and responsive power system.
Together, the two projects show how energy storage can be adapted to different market needs, from strengthening grid flexibility in Malaysia to supporting market participation and grid-forming functions in the Philippines. Sungrow said it will continue to work with regional partners to provide energy storage solutions that help expand renewable integration and improve power system resilience across Southeast Asia.
