Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has introduced its Tectrans II superfast charging battery for light-duty commercial vehicles, marking the advent of 8C charging capabilities for logistics applications. The battery reaches 80 percent state of charge in just 6 minutes and 48 seconds, and can be fully charged in under 9 minutes, offering a charging experience that closely parallels the speed of conventional refueling.
Designed for durability, the Tectrans II battery carries a warranty of up to 10 years or 1 million kilometers. The cell’s internal resistance has been reduced to about half the industry average, curbing heat generation during rapid charging. In addition, graphite particles have been engineered at the atomic interface to minimize active lithium loss, delaying capacity degradation and extending overall battery life. This approach supports vehicle and battery co-lifecycle longevity, which in turn can preserve residual vehicle value.
The new battery also delivers reliable performance in cold climates. At –20 °C, full charging time increases by only 2 minutes and 30 seconds compared to room-temperature conditions, ensuring that operations in harsh winter environments remain efficient and dependable.
Alongside the Tectrans II battery, CATL will deploy an integrated supercharging and battery-swapping station network compatible with both passenger cars and light-duty commercial vehicles. These facilities will feature custom ultra-fast chargers with power outputs tailored to vehicle requirements, and optimized cable lengths to accommodate diverse port designs on vans and trucks. Drivers will benefit from easier plug-in access without complex repositioning maneuvers.
CATL plans to roll out 4,000 of these integrated stations across nearly 190 cities in China this year. As deployment of the Tectrans II battery scales, electric light-duty commercial vehicles are expected to experience seamless, ultra-fast charging across a broad array of urban distribution, intercity transport, cold chain, and last-mile delivery scenarios.
