Chery Automobile has introduced an all-solid-state battery capable of delivering more than 1,500 kilometers of range, with the technology slated for pilot production and vehicle testing on the Exeed ES8 model next year. The announcement was made at Chery’s 2026 Battery Night event, where the company detailed its new Rhino Battery series, following a recent release of next-generation battery technology by a domestic competitor.
Chery’s pilot line is producing solid-state cells across a range of energy densities, all undergoing extensive validation. The Rhino Battery S-series features two core variants: a 60 Ah cell rated at 400 Wh/kg that uses a sulfide-based solid electrolyte paired with a high-nickel ternary cathode, and a 600 Wh/kg design using a polymer-based solid electrolyte and lithium-rich manganese cathode. The latter is projected to exceed 1,500 kilometers of vehicle range, with testing aimed for completion in 2027.
Alongside the solid-state rollout, Chery confirmed additional battery configurations for its upcoming models. The Exeed ES sedan will employ a Rhino E liquid battery, while the Exeed EX7 five-seat SUV will adopt a semi-solid-state pack in the fourth quarter of this year. The Rhino liquid battery supports peak charging power of up to 1,200 kW, allowing a 500-kilometer range boost in approximately eight minutes. It also achieves a 10% reduction in volume expansion and offers a cycle life of around 5,000 cycles.
Chery is simultaneously expanding its charging infrastructure through a planned network of Xunlong ultra-fast charging stations with vehicle-to-grid capability. An initial rollout of 100 stations across ten cities will be followed by a broader deployment targeting more than 20,000 sites by 2029. These stations will leverage silicon carbide components to exceed 96.5% system efficiency.
The technology unveiling coincides with strong financial results for Chery in 2025, including a 34.6% year-over-year net profit increase to 19.02 billion yuan, an 8% rise in global deliveries to 2.63 million vehicles, and an 11.3% revenue increase to 300.29 billion yuan.
