China’s electric vehicle battery sector sustained strong growth in 2025, with total power battery installations reaching 769.7 GWh, up 40.4% from the previous year, according to data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA). Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries continued to dominate, accounting for 81.3% of installations at 625.3 GWh—a 52.9% year-on-year increase—while ternary lithium batteries contributed 144.1 GWh, a more modest 3.7% rise.

In December 2025, power battery installations totaled 98.1 GWh, marking a 35.1% increase compared to December 2024 and a 4.9% increase from November. LFP cells comprised 79.8 GWh of that total (81.3%), climbing 33.7% year-on-year and 5.9% month-on-month. Ternary installations reached 18.2 GWh, up 40.5% year-on-year and essentially flat (0.2%) versus November.

Combined monthly production of power and energy storage batteries in December rose to 201.7 GWh, a 62.1% year-on-year gain and a 14.4% increase from the prior month. For the full year, production of these battery types hit 1,755.6 GWh—a 60.1% jump versus 2024. Within December figures, LFP battery output was 160.5 GWh (up 63.5% year-on-year and 14.9% month-on-month), while ternary output stood at 40.6 GWh (up 56.4% and 11.5%, respectively).

Exports of power and energy storage batteries also expanded, reaching 32.6 GWh in December, up 49.2% year-on-year and 1.3% month-on-month, representing 16.4% of domestic sales. Power battery exports totaled 19.0 GWh, accounting for 58.4% of outbound shipments—a 47.1% year-on-year rise but a 10.4% decline from November. Energy storage battery exports amounted to 13.6 GWh (41.6% of exports), up 52.2% year-on-year and 23.9% month-on-month.

For the full year 2025, China exported 305.0 GWh of power and energy storage batteries, a 50.7% year-on-year increase. Power battery exports reached 189.7 GWh (62.2% of total exports; +41.9%), and energy storage exports were 115.3 GWh (37.8%; +67.9%).
