Envision Energy announced on September 21, 2026, that it had successfully energized Morocco’s first large-scale lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery energy storage system at OCP Green Energy’s Benguerir mining site. The 25 MW / 125 MWh installation is undergoing testing before entering commercial operation.
Envision Energizes 25 MW Battery System in Morocco
The 125 MWh LFP system, contracted in late 2025, is testing ahead of commercial operation and targets lower industrial peak-hour costs.
The project has no year-on-year comparator; its defining feature is long-duration storage configured for industrial load shifting.
Envision supplied the complete storage system and led commissioning under a contract signed in late 2025. The company integrated the battery energy storage system with the site’s solar generation, local grid conditions and industrial load profile. The installation is designed to move surplus daytime solar generation to peak consumption hours, reducing the site’s peak-hour electricity bill by approximately 25%.
With five hours of storage capacity, the system is intended to operate as an industrial energy management asset rather than a short-duration grid resource. It is designed for a 25-year operating life with daily charge-discharge cycles. The project received USD 20 million from the Clean Technology Fund, managed through the African Development Bank Group.
For OCP, the project’s stated economic value centers on lowering peak-hour electricity costs throughout its operating life. OCP Green Energy CEO Omar Kadir said storage would help align variable renewable generation with the continuous electricity requirements of the company’s industrial platforms while improving supply reliability.
The system is also intended to demonstrate how renewable generation and battery storage can support industrial decarbonization in Morocco. According to the announcement, the project supports Morocco’s target of obtaining 52% of its installed electricity capacity from renewable sources by 2030 and could serve as a reference for other industrial applications in Africa.
