Moment Energy has announced plans to build what it describes as the world’s largest battery repurposing facility in Vancouver, British Columbia. The 6-week project, slated to be complete and fully operational by the end of June 2026, marks a major expansion of the company’s North American manufacturing footprint. Following a recent US$40 million Series B funding round—bringing total capital raised to over US$100 million—the new site will convert retired electric vehicle batteries into grid-scale energy storage systems.

Engineered for rapid deployment, the Vancouver facility will support growing demand from data centers, industrial customers and utilities experiencing power availability constraints. Once fully built out, it will operate as a vertically integrated hub, handling everything from battery intake and testing through system integration and deployment. It is expected to reach 1 GWh of repurposing capacity by 2030 and create more than 100 skilled jobs. The site will also carry UL 1974 certification, ensuring batteries are processed and re-engineered under recognized safety standards.

By maintaining a fully domestic supply chain, Moment Energy aims to keep critical battery materials and systems within North America, reducing reliance on overseas manufacturing. The project taps into an emerging energy resource: the hundreds of gigawatt-hours of EV batteries projected to retire across the continent over the next decade. Repurposing these batteries offers a faster, lower-cost approach to energy storage compared to traditional cell manufacturing, while extending the useful life of valuable components.

To illustrate the benefits of second-life storage, Moment Energy highlighted a recent off-grid installation at God’s Pocket Resort in Port Hardy, British Columbia. The resort replaced its diesel generators and lead-acid banks with a three-module Flora battery system, cutting diesel consumption by 66 percent. After more than 1,000 charge cycles, the system continues to run quietly, integrates solar charging and supports heavy energy loads—including kitchen operations and dive compressors—while preserving the resort’s rustic appeal.

This dual focus on large-scale manufacturing and real-world customer deployments positions Moment Energy at the forefront of sustainable energy storage solutions, aligning with policy priorities around local manufacturing, resilience and critical mineral utilization.
