On March 11, 2026, in Oslo, Norway, Vianode announced the signing of a non-binding term sheet to supply 8,000 tonnes of synthetic anode graphite for grid battery energy storage systems (BESS) to a leading North American battery technology company. The material will be produced at Vianode’s Via ONE facility near Oslo, which uses proprietary processing methods to achieve high purity and consistent particle size distributions critical for stable battery performance. Following the planned commissioning of Vianode’s Canadian production site, Via TWO, the annual supply capacity is expected to exceed 10,000 tonnes. The companies anticipate finalizing a binding offtake agreement later this year.
Burkhard Straube, CEO of Vianode, highlighted that the North American market for BESS is poised for significant growth, propelled by expanding residential energy storage, an increase in datacenter infrastructure, and rising demand for grid flexibility. He noted that these applications require battery cells with reliable cycle life and consistent quality, underscoring the importance of securing high-performance anode materials.
Today, over 95% of the synthetic graphite used in lithium-ion batteries for both energy storage and electric vehicles is manufactured in Asia, resulting in substantial import dependency for North American and European markets. By establishing production facilities in Norway and Canada, Vianode aims to strengthen regional supply chains, reduce lead times, and mitigate geopolitical risks associated with long-distance logistics. This local production also supports compliance with regional clean energy regulations and qualifies for government incentives aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing.
Vianode’s synthetic graphite solutions offer tailored performance features, such as optimized particle morphology and surface chemistry, which support fast charging and extended cycle life. Lifecycle analyses indicate up to a 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional graphite production routes, aligning with industry objectives for lower carbon footprints.
Together, Via ONE and Via TWO will enhance supply flexibility to meet demand in North America and Europe, while multiple production sites enable rapid response to market fluctuations and evolving regulatory requirements. With the roadmap set for increased capacity and the expected binding agreement, Vianode is positioned to enhance material availability and supply security for BESS customers across key markets.
