Company Overview

Borealis GmbH, founded in 1994 through a merger of petrochemical units from Neste and Statoil, is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The company develops and supplies advanced polyolefin and base-chemical solutions with an emphasis on recycling and circular materials. Borealis serves mobility, energy, healthcare, consumer products and infrastructure markets. Its stated aim is to provide sustainable polymer solutions that reduce environmental impact and support material circularity. The company operates global production and innovation sites and participates in joint ventures to scale polymer technologies and regional supply chains.

Battery Technology

Borealis uses proprietary polyolefin process technology (Borstar®) to produce high-performance polyethylene and polypropylene grades. Battery-focused innovations include a three-layer cast polypropylene (cPP)–aluminum laminate for lithium-ion pouch films that provides deep-draw formability, hermetic sealing, high seal strength and robust adhesion to metal foil while enabling full recyclability. The company also supplies PP/PE compounds for lightweight, recyclable battery housings and runs pilot extrusion and film-validation lines to qualify materials with independent battery testing institutes. Mechanical recycling streams are integrated to reduce virgin polymer content and improve material circularity.

Products

Borealis supplies polyolefin resins and compounds, three-layer cPP pouch laminates, and polypropylene/polyethylene battery housings. Offerings include Borstar® grades, post-consumer recyclate compounds and demonstration pouch films. Applications cover electric vehicles, stationary energy storage, consumer electronics and industrial sectors where weight reduction, seal integrity and recyclability are required.

Recent Projects

In 2025 Borealis completed internal and customer trials of its three-layer cPP pouch laminate and entered independent validation with battery testing institutes, leading to a demonstration pouch cell at K Fair 2025. The company conducted pilot-scale extrusion and film-conversion tests and advanced collaborative trials with film producers, laminators and battery manufacturers to validate formability, seal integrity and recyclability ahead of commercial rollout.

Investors

Borealis has been majority-owned by OMV with a significant stake held by ADNOC. A corporate restructuring announced in mid-2025 involved a proposed sale to Irth Solutions backed by TPG Growth. The company also operates strategic joint ventures such as Borouge and Baystar™ to extend production footprint and market access.
