Company Overview

Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) was founded in 1940 by Haldor Topsøe and is headquartered in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. The company develops catalysts, proprietary chemical processes, and systems that support the energy transition, including hydrogen, sustainable fuels, and battery materials. With about 2,800 employees worldwide, Topsoe’s mission is to help industrial customers reduce emissions and shift to lower-carbon feedstocks and fuels through technologies such as SOEC electrolysis, catalysts for refining and chemicals, and high-voltage cobalt-free cathode materials. The company combines long-term research with industrial-scale manufacturing and commercial deployment.

Battery Technology

Topsoe’s core technologies cover heterogeneous catalysts, high-temperature electrolysis and battery-materials engineering. Its LNMO (LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4) TBM-129 cathode is a cobalt-free, high-voltage spinel engineered for >4.7 V operation, reducing raw-material cost and pack cell count. LNMO is produced as dense spherical particles (tap density >2.3 g/cm³, low surface area) for improved cycle life and fast charge/discharge (≈80% capacity retention at 10C). Topsoe also scales SOEC cells for power-to-X hydrogen and synthetic fuels and applies >600 patent families to optimize surfaces, thermal stability and safety.

Products

Topsoe supplies catalysts, process units and materials for low-carbon ammonia, green and blue hydrogen, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, renewable natural gas, syngas and sulfuric acid production. For batteries it offers LNMO cathode active materials and electrode formulations for high-rate, cobalt-free lithium-ion cells. Customers include aviation, marine, refineries, chemicals, metals and cement, power utilities, rail and automotive sectors.

Investors

Topsoe is majority controlled by the Topsøe family through Haldor Topsoe Holding A/S and remains privately held. Singapore investor Temasek holds a 30% minority stake (acquired 2019). Public equity is not listed; disclosed capital activity emphasizes internal R&D investments and project financing to scale electrolysis, catalyst manufacturing and upstream battery materials.
