Oxford Innovation is the commercial and investment arm of the University of Oxford, managing technology transfer, spinout creation and consulting services to bring academic research into practical use. As a wholly owned subsidiary, it supports researchers with IP management, licensing and company formation, and operates an incubator that nurtures early-stage ventures. The organization also oversees clinical outcome assessments, offering services such as COA translation and ePRO migration testing. Through Oxford Innovation Finance, it provides growth capital and strategic guidance to UK startups.
Investment activity is driven by two primary channels: the Oxford Investment Opportunity Network, a syndicate of more than 700 angel investors, and the Oxford Innovation EIS Growth Fund, which makes staged, tax-efficient investments in high-potential technology companies. The team evaluates opportunities based on novel scientific advances, commercial viability and team expertise, with a focus on ventures capable of global scale. Since its launch, the group has supported over 1,400 businesses and helped them raise more than £35 million in capital.
Within cleantech and battery technology, Oxford Innovation has backed a range of spinouts from university research. Notable examples include Oxford PV, which develops perovskite solar cells, and Porpoise Power, focused on tidal energy solutions. A partnership with Fortescue Zero secured significant funding for industrial and grid-scale battery research, while support for Low Carbon Hub has driven rooftop solar installations in Oxfordshire. Beyond power generation and storage, the portfolio encompasses sensor technologies and bio-inspired hydropower systems, reinforcing the university’s role in sustainable innovation.
