LeydenJar, established in 2016 in the Netherlands, specializes in developing advanced silicon anodes for lithium-ion batteries. The company’s innovative approach transforms conventional battery technology through pure silicon-based solutions, resulting in significantly improved energy storage capabilities. With 90 employees representing 21 nationalities, LeydenJar operates from two strategic locations in the Netherlands. The company’s technology enables batteries to store 70% more energy while reducing CO2 emissions by 85%, addressing both performance and sustainability requirements in modern energy storage solutions.

Battery Technology

LeydenJar’s core innovation lies in its pure silicon anode technology, manufactured using a proprietary Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) process. This method creates ultra-thin silicon layers on copper substrates, achieving 100% silicon content in the anodes. The resulting structure can store ten times more lithium ions compared to traditional graphite anodes.

The technical specifications of LeydenJar’s batteries demonstrate substantial improvements over conventional solutions:

  • 70% increased energy density
  • 10x thinner design capabilities
  • 7-minute charging time to reach 80% capacity
  • 450+ stable charge cycles
  • 85% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions during production

These advancements make the technology particularly valuable for applications in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, wearables, and drones. The silicon anodes integrate seamlessly into existing battery manufacturing processes, offering manufacturers a straightforward path to enhanced performance.

Recent Projects

In 2024, LeydenJar announced the establishment of its first industrial-scale anode factory at Strijp-T in Eindhoven, scheduled to begin operations in 2026. The facility will produce silicon anodes with a 70 MWh capacity. The company also secured the Automotive Innovation Award 2024 for its contributions to sustainable transportation solutions. Recent research findings confirmed the significant environmental benefits of their technology, validating the 85% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional anode production.

Investors

LeydenJar has secured approximately €100 million in total funding through various sources. Notable investors include YARD ENERGY, which led the Series A round, along with Catalus Capital, Invest-NL, ING Sustainable Investments, and Somerset Capital Partners. The European Investment Bank provided €30 million in financing, supported by the European Commission. Additional backing comes from BOM Brabant Ventures, DOEN Participations, and PVS Investments. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency contributed over €5 million in subsidies.
