BASF Canada Inc. is a subsidiary of BASF SE, one of the world’s largest chemical companies, headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. With over 1,200 employees across multiple production facilities and offices in Canada, BASF Canada plays a vital role in the global BASF Group’s mission to create chemistry for a sustainable future. The company operates across six key business segments: Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care, and Agricultural Solutions. While BASF Canada is not directly involved in battery production, its parent company, BASF SE, is a significant player in the battery value chain, particularly in the development of cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries.

BASF Canada contributes to the broader BASF Group’s efforts in advancing sustainable battery technologies, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics. Through collaborations and innovative projects, BASF Canada supports the transition to e-mobility by providing materials and solutions that enhance battery performance, sustainability, and efficiency.

Battery Technology

BASF Canada, through its parent company, is deeply involved in the battery technology sector, focusing on cathode active materials (CAM) and sustainable battery recycling. BASF SE produces CAM, a critical component in lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in EVs and consumer electronics. The company is also pioneering the recycling of battery materials, such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese, to create new CAM from recycled metals. This closed-loop recycling process significantly reduces the carbon footprint of battery production.

In North America, BASF is establishing a CAM production and recycling facility in Bécancour, Quebec, set to begin operations in 2025. This facility will serve the electromobility markets in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Additionally, BASF collaborates with Nanotech Energy and American Battery Technology Company to produce CAM from recycled metals in Battle Creek, Michigan. These initiatives highlight BASF’s commitment to sustainable battery production and its role in reducing reliance on virgin raw materials.

BASF also develops advanced anode binders for lithium-ion batteries, which improve energy density and charge capacity. These innovations are crucial for enhancing the performance of EV batteries and supporting the global shift toward e-mobility.

Recent Projects

In recent years, BASF Canada has been involved in several notable projects. One key initiative is the establishment of a CAM production and recycling facility in Bécancour, Quebec, which is expected to begin operations in 2025. This project underscores BASF’s commitment to supporting the North American EV market with locally produced and recycled battery materials.

Additionally, BASF has partnered with Nanotech Energy and American Battery Technology Company to develop a closed-loop battery recycling system in North America. This collaboration focuses on recycling battery materials like nickel, cobalt, and manganese to produce new CAM, reducing the environmental impact of battery production.

Investors

BASF Canada Inc. is a subsidiary of BASF SE, which has a diverse investor base. Approximately 46% to 47% of BASF SE’s share capital is held by private investors, primarily in Germany. Institutional investors from the United States and Canada hold around 18% to 19% of the shares, while investors from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and other parts of Europe hold the remaining shares. BASF SE’s corporate venture capital arm, BASF Venture Capital, invests in startups and funds focused on chemical-related technologies, clean tech, and sustainable innovations.
