Transport & Environment reported on October 26, 2026, that battery electric vehicle sales reached record levels across Europe in the third quarter of 2026. Thirteen of the European Union’s 27 member countries recorded their highest-ever quarterly BEV sales during the period.
EU Battery-Electric Share Reaches 27% in Third Quarter
EU battery-electric share increased as record quarterly sales spread across more member states and BEVs widened their lead over petrol.
The source states Jan–Sep share as both 23% and 22.7%; Q3 reaches 27%.
Battery electric vehicles accounted for 27% of the EU new-car market in the third quarter. BEV sales were also 44% higher than petrol vehicle registrations, widening their lead after battery-electric registrations surpassed petrol registrations for the first time in the second quarter of 2026.
The third-quarter result continued the increase in battery-electric adoption recorded across the EU during the first nine months of the year. From January through September 2026, BEVs represented 22.7% of the EU27 market. The source summarized this as a 23% market share when rounded to a whole percentage point.
The comparable market share for 2025 was 16.1%. Based on the figures reported by Transport & Environment, the battery-electric share therefore increased by almost 7 percentage points over the first three quarters of 2026 compared with the previous year.
The data indicate that battery-electric vehicles expanded their share both across the EU as a whole and within individual national markets. More than two-fifths of EU member countries set quarterly BEV sales records in the third quarter, while the EU-wide share for the quarter exceeded the cumulative share recorded from January through September.
Transport & Environment’s findings focus on battery-electric vehicles rather than the broader category of electrified powertrains. The reported figures cover the EU27 market and compare BEV sales with petrol registrations, as well as with battery-electric market shares in 2025.
