Echion and Energy Tech Solution (ETS) have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop battery technology based on Echion’s XNO niobium-based anode material. The agreement adds ETS to Echion’s partner network as its first total battery solution provider, covering production line design, cell assembly equipment and cell design research and development in South Korea.
Under the agreement, Echion will use ETS as a vetted contract manufacturing partner for demonstration cells and product design iterations. For customers seeking XNO cells, ETS will allocate part of its capacity in Chungju, South Korea, to customize cylindrical, pouch and prismatic cell formats. The company will offer turnkey cell design and manufacturing.
Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, ETS also operates in Chungju and Detroit. It builds battery manufacturing equipment for startups and gigafactories, supplying production hardware, personnel support and product strategy. ETS also acts as a contract cell manufacturer for next-generation battery startups in Asia, Europe and North America.
Echion developed XNO for mass industrial applications including mining, rail, maritime operations and data centers. The company says the material provides higher performance and durability than mainstream lithium-ion battery technologies. The partnership is intended to give cell manufacturers a route to adopt XNO through equipment, cell design and contract production services.
The companies describe niobium-based batteries, including those using XNO, as a higher-performing alternative to lithium titanium oxide (LTO) batteries in the premium fast-charging, long-cycle-life category. ETS aims to demonstrate XNO-based batteries with cycle stability and high-rate charging capability, targeting up to 50,000 cycles and charge rates as high as 10C.
