Li Auto expects its solid-state batteries to be ready for limited vehicle deployment in 2027 or 2028, although mature mass production for automotive applications remains further away. Chinese media outlet Cailian reported the timeline, citing a company insider.

The automaker has several solid-state battery projects under development and has validated prototypes in eyewear products, according to Liu Zhimin, Li Auto’s senior director of power batteries. The company launched its Livis smart glasses in December 2025, but did not highlight the device’s use of solid-state batteries at the time.

Liu said achieving mature vehicle mass production while maintaining a consistent and reliable user experience is expected to take another 5 years. He identified lifespan, charging performance and cost as continuing challenges that must be addressed simultaneously. Limited vehicle deployment would therefore not mean broad use across production models in 2027 or 2028.

The solid-state battery program is part of Li Auto’s broader effort to expand its in-house battery capabilities. The company said on September 7 that internally developed batteries were already used in the Li L8, Li L6 and Li i8, with deployment planned to gradually extend across its lineup. Li Auto began developing cells in-house in 2020, covering 5C cells, battery packs and battery management systems.

Production is handled by a joint venture established with Sunwoda in 2025, with each company holding a 50% stake. Sunwoda disclosed on September 4 that Li Auto planned to invest in Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery Co Ltd, giving the automaker a direct 8.79% stake after completion and making it the battery company’s second-largest single shareholder.
