SK On, a prominent global battery and trading company, has been chosen as the battery supplier for Slate, a U.S.-based electric vehicle (EV) startup. This agreement underscores SK On’s expanding role as a key battery provider in the North American market.
Under the terms of the deal, SK On will supply approximately 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of U.S.-manufactured batteries starting in 2026 and continuing through 2031. Additionally, there is an option to increase the supply volume as Slate scales its production operations. This collaboration highlights SK On’s strategic efforts to enhance its presence in North America and adapt to the dynamic EV landscape. Partnering with emerging companies like Slate demonstrates SK On’s capability to provide flexible and scalable battery solutions to meet the growing demand in the U.S. market.
Lee Seok-hee, CEO of SK On, stated, “This partnership with Slate demonstrates how our U.S. manufacturing capabilities are enabling more effective and flexible support for innovative customers. North America is a key market for us, and we are committed to delivering reliable, high-quality batteries that support our partners in making EVs more accessible, while reducing emissions, and advancing sustainable mobility.”
As part of South Korea’s second-largest conglomerate, SK Group, SK On has been a pioneer in the U.S. EV battery manufacturing sector since 2019. This early investment has allowed the company to make significant progress in the market, enhancing its competitiveness and supporting a growing customer base in the region.
The partnership with Slate also marks SK On’s entry into more affordable EV market segments. Historically focused on supplying premium EV models, SK On’s latest collaboration broadens its market reach and aligns with industry efforts to promote wider EV adoption.
Slate’s upcoming vehicle, the Slate Truck, will utilize SK On’s high-nickel NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) batteries, which are known for their superior energy density, safety, and performance. This aligns with Slate’s objective to offer an affordable EV without compromising on reliability and driving quality.
Chris Barman, CEO of Slate, commented, “Slate is a truck platform so customizable that it can transform from a 2-seat pickup to a 5-seat SUV. SK On’s innovative approach and partnership has allowed us to meet our target of delivering a radically affordable vehicle.”
To commemorate the partnership, SK On’s CEO Lee attended Slate’s vehicle and brand launch event in Long Beach, California, on April 24, joining Slate’s CEO Barman and other industry leaders for the unveiling of the electric pickup.
